Auto manufacturer Ford China recently completed its cross-border data transmissions filing – enabling its global after-sales operations to run smoothly.

The process, which took just a month, was facilitated by a detailed data checklist recently introduced in the Lin-gang Special Area in East China's Shanghai.

In May, Lin-gang released a general data list of cross-border data to facilitate outbound data flows by companies and contribute to its high-quality economic development.

The list, which will be initially applicable for one year, is further divided into 11 data applications areas.

It's said that the clear guidance has significantly eased the process for companies like Ford.

Ford China praised the efficiency of the "Lin-gang channel", which allowed it to swiftly complete the filings process. The company submitted its application through Lin-gang's data service platform and received approval by late July.

"Given Ford's global information management system, cross-border data flows are critical for our after-sales services and HR information," said Wu Ji, director of information security and data compliance at Ford China.

Before the channel was established, companies faced significant challenges in navigating the cross-border data transmissions approvals process, which involved extensive documentation and multiple rounds of reviews.

The new checklist, which includes areas such as global manufacturing and research and development, is said to significantly simplify the process.

Overall, the Lin-gang Special Area is continuing to expand its support for cross-border data flows, with plans to release additional checklists in sectors like reinsurance and shipping.

Moreover, Lin-gang is advancing the construction of an international data economy industrial park – enhancing its infrastructure with international data centers and specialized internet channels, to better serve global data-driven businesses.
