World's largest car carrier makes maiden call in Shanghai Port
The world's largest car carrier, Glovis Leader, docked at Shanghai's Nangang Terminal on May 4 to load more than 37,000 vehicles for export. This marks the vessel's first visit to Shanghai Port since entering service on April 28.

Measuring 230 meters in length and 40 meters in width, Glovis Leader is capable of transporting 10,800 vehicles in a single voyage. While setting a new benchmark for global shipping, it has greatly slashed transportation costs for cars.
However, handling such an ultra-large vessel not only tests a port's integrated logistics capabilities but also the efficiency of its customs clearance. The Yangshan Border Inspection Station rose to the occasion, ensuring a seamless clearance process through credit-based evaluation of the vessel and its operator.
In addition, the station also offered immediate approval for boarding permits upon application, facilitating onboard personnel in navigation maintenance, supply provisioning, and vessel mooring.
China has maintained its position as the world's largest auto exporter since 2023. All car carrier berths at Nangang Terminal for 2026 were fully booked at the start of the year, highlighting both high global demand for Chinese-made cars and the terminal's pivotal role in international logistics.
