Artificial intelligence is making healthcare more convenient for expatriates in Shanghai, with local hospitals adopting this novel technology to help translate medical records and guide Internet Hospital service with bilingual service.

The Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital recently integrated DeepSeek, an AI assistant, into its online service to offer quick translation of radiological and ultrasound exam results from Chinese into English, allowing expatriate patients to have a more convenient and accurate understanding.

American Arthur Marsh was very excited to be informed about the new function available on the hospital's public WeChat account. He and his wife took one of their sons to the hospital for a CT scan after the boy suffered vomiting after falling from the sofa.

"We were worried about a brain injury due to the fall and took him for a check. Previously, my wife used to do the translation for me. This time, I could read the medical record as it was translated into English quickly," he said. "It is very convenient for foreigners, thanks to the new technology."

Hospital officials said more languages will be introduced onto the platform in the future, allowing patients from different countries to read medical records conveniently.

The hospital said it has adopted DeepSeek into its internal system to boost intelligent medicine and will introduce more new measures gradually. The intelligent technology has been used in hospital management and will be deeply involved in healthcare like pre-consultation before registering for outpatient service, medical report explanation, quality control on medical records and scientific research.

In addition, the hospital is also planning to expand the AI translation service gradually to all medical records and papers to better serve expatriate patients.

The Children's Hospital of Fudan University has also adopted DeepSeek into its intelligent whole-process service system covering pre-, during and after-outpatient service. Parents only need to type the child's symptoms in simple language, then the AI system will offer guidance to help them to register and reserve the appropriate department and give tips on traffic and information about the healthcare process.

During the outpatient service, the system will give detailed guidance on medication based on the doctor's prescription and navigation inside the hospital. After the service, it will give tips on rehabilitation and health management as well as follow-up visit reminder to achieve the closed-loop service.

The system can recognize both Chinese and English, which means expatriate patients also can use the system, hospital officials said.
