Yangshan Deep-Water Port sets new record for green methanol bunkering

The global shipping industry is stepping up its shift toward low-carbon operations, and Yangshan Deep-Water Port in Shanghai's Lin-gang Special Area is emerging as a key hub for green methanol.

The methanol bunkering vessel Hai Gang Zhi Yuan delivered 3,640 metric tons of green methanol produced in China to CMA CGM Osmium, a container ship from Malta, at Yangshan Port on March 5 — setting a new national record for the largest single ship-to-ship transfer of domestically produced green methanol.

Shanghai Port, of which Yangshan Port is a key part, ranks first among major global ports for green methanol bunkering volumes. Since the port completed China's first green methanol bunkering operation on April 10, 2024, it has served 27 methanol-fueled vessels with a total bunkering volume of 90,300 tons, including 17,200 tons of green methanol across seven calls.

As 10 Chinese government ministries recently rolled out coordinated measures covering green fuel production, bunkering, trading, and regulation, Shanghai is gaining new momentum in its ambitions to become a world-leading international shipping hub and advance the low-carbon transition across the shipping sector.

As Shanghai Port's green energy bunkering services continue to mature, more shipping companies are choosing to refuel there. In the first two months of 2026, the port completed 24 liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering operations totaling 135,000 cubic meters — a year-on-year increase of 33 percent — and six methanol bunkering operations totaling 23,500 tons, up 137 percent year-on-year.
