As a vital financial instrument for mitigating systemic risk, reinsurance enables insurance companies to transfer and disperse catastrophic, emerging, and complex risks globally through various risk-sharing mechanisms.
The Shanghai International Reinsurance Exchange was established to address the challenges faced by reinsurance companies, including information barriers, inefficient transactions, and elevated settlement costs.
For offline transactions, the exchange has introduced an innovative trading system featuring physical trading seats. In addition, it is equipped with international video conference rooms, soundproof phone booths, and other facilities, enabling representatives of insurance institutions worldwide to carry out negotiations more efficiently.
For online transactions, the international reinsurance business platform enables insurance institutions in China and abroad to connect through standardized interfaces, streamlining online trading services and reducing information exchange costs.
As of Dec 31, 2025, 151 insurance institutions had registered on the platform. In 2025, the platform recorded a cumulative ceding premium of 136.29 billion yuan ($19.53 billion) and a cumulative assumed premium of 18.27 billion yuan.
With continuous enhancements, the Shanghai International Reinsurance Exchange in Lin-gang is set to place China's reinsurance market at the forefront of global digitalization and standardization.
