Tesla Shanghai Megafactory officially goes into operation
The Tesla Shanghai Megafactory, located in the city's Lin-gang Special Area, officially went into production on Feb 11. The first Megapack, an ultra-large commercial electrochemical energy storage system, has already rolled off the production line, signaling a new phase for Tesla's operations in China.
The Shanghai Megafactory for energy storage is Tesla's first such facility outside the United States. Construction commenced in the Lin-gang Special Area on May 23 last year, and the factory achieved the milestone of producing its first product just nine months after acquiring the land. This timeline is three months ahead of the 12-month period for Tesla's previous vehicle factory.

Megapack resembles a white shipping container, with a maximum weight exceeding 38 metric tons. Each unit can store more than 3,900 kWh of electricity.

At the launch ceremony, Mike Snyder, vice president of Energy and Charging at Tesla, stated that the launch of the Shanghai Megafactory for energy storage will ramp up production this quarter, helping Tesla expand into more markets.
Lu Yu, director of the High-tech Department of the Lin-gang Special Area Administration, noted that Tesla's second collaboration with Lin-gang reflects strong confidence in the area's business environment. Throughout their cooperation, the administration went beyond merely providing quick responses. Instead, it actively participated in the project, designing the entire construction plan for the enterprise and meticulously reviewing all intermediate steps, from land acquisition to construction.
