A freight train loaded with furniture from Jiujiang Port, in East China's Jiangxi province, arrived at Yangshan Port in East China's Shanghai during this year's May Day holiday.

The 21 metric tons of furniture it carried in containers, worth 513,000 yuan ($73,300), will be exported abroad. This was the first batch of goods transported between the two ports through a combined receiving and unloading service.

It was also the first time that such a receiving and unloading model has been applied in Jiangxi, a province outside the Yangtze River Delta region.

Launched by Shanghai and other ports surrounding it with the support of customs, the service uses other Yangtze River branch ports as unloading destinations for Yangshan Port. It implements overall supervision and aims to make the logistics of imports and exports more economical and time-efficient.

The combined service made its Yangshan debut in November 2020, when 23 tons of red oak board imported from the US were inspected and released at Yangshan Port and directly transported to Taicang Port, in East China's Jiangsu province.

By the end of 2022, the service had been rolled out to 12 ports in the Yangtze River Delta. Between them, Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta handled a total of 343,000 twenty-foot equivalent units or TEUs of import and export containers throughout last year.
