The Lin-gang Special Area Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors Industry Investment conference took place during the Shanghai Global Investment Promotion Conference 2024 on March 29.

Nearly 200 companies from the wide-bandgap semiconductors and smart car sectors, along with investment institutions, attended the event in the Lin-gang Special Area in East China's Shanghai.

Wide bandgap semiconductors boast significantly higher conductivity that regular semiconductors and can operate at much higher temperatures, frequencies and voltages – making them suitable for a wider range of applications for next generation devices.

During the event, the new wide-bandgap semiconductors industry base was launched, signifying Lin-gang's future as a hub for the key industry.

Later, several investment and financing institutions – including the China Development Bank and the Shanghai Semiconductor Equipment and Material Investment Fund – jointly established the wide-bandgap semiconductors industry chain investment alliance.

Additionally, the automotive-wide bandgap semiconductors industry chain alliance was formed. It comprises Lin-gang's major semiconductor companies, including GTA Semiconductor and automotive manufacturers including SAIC and NIO.

Furthermore, two industrial chain innovation consortiums – GTA Semiconductor with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, as well as SICC with Xidian University – have settled in the Lin-gang Special Area.

Currently, Lin-gang has gathered a group of leading enterprises in the wide-bandgap semiconductors industry such as GTA.

Plans are to continuously enrich and improve the industrial ecosystem during the next three years – creating a complete industry supply chain from device designs, substrates production, wafer manufacturing, module packaging to end applications.

The Lin-gang Special Area aims to hit what it calls a "Double Hundred Billion" goal by 2026, with equipment materials and wafer manufacturers topping 10 billion yuan ($1.57 billion) each in value – making it a leading base for the wide bandgap semiconductors sector in China.

On attaining that, it's said that it will then boast the most comprehensive industry supply chain, strongest innovation capability and best applications ecosystem.
