Yangshan Port conducted a simulation at the Shengdong Container Terminal on Sept 5, testing to see if large container ships can safely navigate in and out of the port under conditions with poor visibility.
This trial is part of a new navigation initiative by Yangshan Port's maritime bureau. Under this initiative, the port will conduct real-life trials on how large-scale operations can still be completed despite conditions where visibility is poor.
During the simulation, a scenario was created to mimic poor visibility at Yangshan Port. The Shanghai International Port Group's production and business department formulated an operational plan for the "COSCO Shipping XX" vessel to operate under these conditions.
After a comprehensive assessment by the pilot station and the Shengdong Terminal, it was confirmed that it was safe for large container ships to enter and exit Yangshan Port under such conditions. After the ship's captain provided written confirmation, and all parties were involved in creating relevant safety measures.
The Yangshan Port maritime bureau command center managed traffic and an electronic escort during the trial, ensuring the safety of the "COSCO Shipping XX" vessel as it entered the port. When visibility dropped below 200 meters, the vessel temporarily anchored in a nearby safe area, with tugboats on standby. Once visibility improved to over 200 meters, the vessel followed the plan to berth. After this exercise, a post-assessment was conducted to optimize workflow.
With Yangshan Port's average of 31.8 foggy days per year, this initiative is of great significance. Once implemented, this initiative will improve port efficiency, on-time vessel arrivals, and cargo safety.
